The National Institute of Design (NID) is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multi-disciplinary institutions in the field of design education and research. The Business Week, USA has listed NID as one of the top 25 European & Asian programmes in the world. The institute functions as an autonomous body under the department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. NID has been declared ‘Institution of National Importance’ by the Act of Parliament, by virtue of the National Institute of Design Act 2014.

NID is recognised by the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) under Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organisation.

NID has been a pioneer in industrial design education after Bauhaus and Ulm in Germany and is known for its pursuit of design excellence to make Designed in India, Made for the World a reality. NID's graduates have made a mark in key sectors of commerce, industry and social development by taking role of catalysts and through thought leadership.

NID Gandhinagar is situated in the city of Gandhinagar, in Gujarat. As part of expansion plan, NID has built a new postgraduate campus at Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat State. Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath laid the foundation stone for this campus and it consists of a jewellery and automobile design centre along with lifestyle accessory design, new media design, toy and game design, strategic design management, transportation and information design centres.

NID's R&D Campus at Bengaluru was set up as a joint initiative of and funding from the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India and was inaugurated in March 2006. R&D Campus commenced with two research intensive PG Programmes namely Design for Retail Experience and Design for Digital Experience, from the academic year 2007-2008. Currently five Master's programmes are offered from this campus. NID's Research & Development Campus addresses the immediate need for an exclusive Design Research centre in the country, by fostering the creative design spirit and sighting new opportunities and frontiers through NID's design acumen nurtured over the four decades of intense teaching-learning process.

All NID campuses are open to visitors throughout the year from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (apart from public holidays). Visitors will have to obtain a Visitor's Pass at the Main Gate to enter the campus. If you are visiting us in a group with prior appointment, NID can arrange Guided Tour of Campus.

NID DAT 2017 Important Dates – National Institute of Design will be announcing important dates on October 26, 2016, along with NID DAT 2017 application forms. Candidates seeking admissions to Bachelor of Design programme through NID DAT 2017 can check here list of events including application dates, exam dates, admit card as well as result and counselling dates as mentioned in this page below. NID offers admissions to Bachelors in Product Design, Furniture Design, Ceramic and Glass Design, Graphic Design, Animation Film Design, Film and Video Communication, Exhibition Design and Textile Design programmes.

Highlights of NID DAT 2016 Important Dates


NID DAT 2017 Notification – National Institute of Design invites applications of NID DAT 2017 from October 26, 2016 in online mode.

NID DAT 2017 Applications – The application form of NID DAT 2017 is available in online mode from October 26. 

NID DAT 2017 Admit Card – Candidates will be issued admit card of NID DAT 2017 on December 20, 2016.  Candidates shortlisted for mains exam, will be issued separate admit card after the announcement of prelims results of NID DAT 2017.

NID DAT 2017 Exam – Design Aptitude Test will be conducted in offline mode on January 8, 2017. The exam will be of three hours duration from 10: 00 AM to 1: 00 PM. 

NID DAT 2017 Results – The results of Design Aptitude Test will be announced on February 28, 2017. The final merit list of NID DAT 2017 will be announced on May 2, 2017.
